The Sanctuary in Rudy

Minor Basilica of Our Humble Lady in Rudy

Built by Cistercian monks in the thirteenth century, the Church of St. Mary’s in Rudy, has ever since been the target of a growing number of pilgrims to the miraculous image of Our Humble Lady. Over the next few centuries, the cult of St. Mary developed rapidly in the area of the Abbey. In the year 1974 the Rudy Temple was announced as the Shrine of the Holy Year. In the year 1995 the church was raised to the rank of the Diocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Rudy. But the most significant ceremony, to commemorate the 750th Anniversary of the Cistercian foundation, was the elevation of the temple to the dignity of Minor Basilica. This took place on June 14, 2009. and was commemorated with a plaque placed on the facade of the porch. Today the pilgrims to Rudy, both organized groups and individual pilgrims, arrive at the feet of Our Humble Lady and particularly on Wednesdays, the faithful gather at Novena.
